Daily Seeking God... November 22, 2007

Reading: Psalm 95

Key verses:  Psalm 95:1-7 “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.  Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.  For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.

In his hands are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.  The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.”

Reflection:  I love this verse: “The sea is His, for He made it.”  Awesome!  This is a good reminder of why we worship and praise our Lord.  He made all this stuff we sometimes try to claim as ours.  God has entrusted us with this stuff but He is the one who made it.

When I think of the beauty of this world it reminds me of the Lord.  I see His hand on all things and especially me.  Remember the Lord made us the way we are, so rejoice!  God made us for a purpose.  To worship Him!  Amen.

Meditation:  Think about God’s creation.  Think about how awesome it is.   Think of how blessed we are to be in the midst of Him in our daily lives because he created it all!

Pray and thank God for His gift.  Take time to worship Him in your own way today.  Sing along to songs on the radio, make up your own songs, or just talk to Him.  He’s listening and He’s worth it!

Reading: Isaiah 41:1-16

Key Verse: Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you in my righteous right hand.”

Reflection: Friday, November second started off as my day of fear. It was the day of my tonsillectomy. As my family and I were driving to the ENT office so many thoughts were running through my head, “what if something goes wrong… what if I am in such unbearable pain that I can’t even handle it…” and as we pulled into the parking lot my stomach dropped. I started to get that lump in my throat like I was going to cry, but just as I was about to burst we parked and my mom and dad turned around looked at me and said,” we want to pray for you.” As they prayed they asked God to keep me safe and calm. Then as I got out of the car I was in shock my stomach suddenly felt fine and the lump in my throat was gone. God had truly taken away my fear and I know he was with me through the entire surgery.

There is a song that Building 429 sings that I love. It is called "Fearless"and it says this:

No I don’t understand
And I can’t comprehend
This power that draws me to you
But I know for the cross
I’ll consider it all lost
In an effort to tell of the truth

That the world may know
That the world may know
You have been heaven sent to us

I’ll be fearless for You
I’ll be fearless for You
Take me I’m Yours
I’ll be fearless for You

All the times that I’ve failed
When my doubt has prevailed
These are the moments I’m giving to you
Cause I can’t be ashamed
No I can’t fear the pain
When it comes time to be living proof

So the world may see
That the captives are free
‘Cause you have been heaven sent to us

Unwilling to bend
Unwilling to break
And Headstrong I’ll stand
No matter what it takes

When we are truly fearless for God we are able show the world what we are made of. It is in this time that we are living proof that God here and living in us.

Meditation: Pause for a minute and think of all your fears and write them down. After completing that listen to this song or just read over it. Think of ways that you can turn your fear into faith, and so you can rip up that paper and throw it away… Now you can be fearless for GOD!! =)

God please take away all my fears. Please help me to know that you are always here with me and you will never leave. Thank you for helping me and strengthening me in my times of weakness. Lord may I live my life in such a way that I am FEARLESS FOR YOU! Amen

Daily Seeking God... November 20, 2007

Reading: Hebrews 11:1-12

Key Verse: Hebrews 11:8 “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Reflection: Abraham did not know where he was going.  It was enough for him to know that he went with God.  He did not lean as much on the promise as he did on the Promiser.  He didn’t doubt, but instead looked to his King to help him on his journey.

I wonder how many times in my life I have had the opportunity to follow God, but was too afraid because the way was not clear to me?  I like my life to be under control and to have the path that I am on be well lit and clearly marked.  But is that really trusting God?  I know He has a plan for me and I know He is so much wiser than I will ever be. Why is it so hard, then for me to have faith?

Abraham accomplished amazing things by trusting in God.  His life and the world was never the same once he starting leaning on his Lord.  That is the life I want to have, the life I will have.  I know that if I follow God’s path, it will take me to places better than I can even imagine. He knows no fear and expects us to fear nothing when we are with Him.  I will take that first step and I will not be afraid…

Meditation:  Think of a time when you heard God’s voice telling you to trust Him and you were too afraid to obey.  Imagine how your life could be if you had listened.  Give this to God with a promise to trust Him completely in the future.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the way You love me and for never leaving me alone.  I will walk with you and listen for your voice.  Lead me to a place where I can be used by You and in all that I do, I will give You the glory.

Daily Seeking God... November 19, 2007

Reading: Hebrews 10:19-25

Key verse: Hebrews 10:23
(NIV) “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for He who is promised is faithful.”

(NASB) “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”

(The Message) “So let's do it—full of belief, confident that we're presentable inside and out. Let's keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word.”

Reflection: This is a great scripture to ruminate on at this time of fasting since it begins with lettuce. :)

Looking back on my life God has been faithful to me in the good times and in the extremely difficult times. Life is more peaceful when I don’t turn to the left or right but keep my eyes on Him, staying on the path straight ahead. God is faithful in helping me do the next right thing when I simply ask Him.

We serve a God of Promise. We serve a God of Hope. I’m looking forward to His faithful promises for us as we’re reading and praying and seeking Him in these days ahead.

Meditation: Read these lyrics or listen to “Hold Fast” by Mercy Me. Reflect on the Hope in God’s promises for your own journey.

To everyone who’s hurting, to those who’ve had enough
To all the undeserving, that should cover all of us
Please do not let go… I promise there is Hope

Hold fast, help is on the way, Hold Fast; He’s come to save the day
What I’ve learned in my life, one thing greater than my strife, is HIS GRASP…So Hold Fast

Will this season ever pass? Can we stop this ride?
Will we see the sun at last? Or could this be our lot in life?
Please do not let go, I promise you there’s Hope

You may think you’re all alone and there’s
No way that any one could know what you’re going through.
But if you only hear one thing just understand
We are all the same, searching for the Truth
The truth of what we’re soon to face
Unless someone comes to take our place
Is there anyone?
All we want is to be free,
Free from our captivity, Lord…Here he comes

Hold fast, help is on the way, Hold Fast; He’s come to save the day
What I’ve learned in my life one thing stronger than my strife is HIS GRASP…So Hold Fast

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending your Son as an all encompassing sacrifice for us. Thank you for keeping a firm grip on me and my loved ones. Please continue that grip on me and my loved ones as we grow in this journey with You. Help me to focus on who You are and Your promises in the days ahead as we look forward to Heaven. I give you all the praise and glory! Amen.

Daily Seeking God... November 18, 2007

Reading: James 1:12-27

Key verse: James 1:12 (NAS)   “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”

Reflection:  Life has lots of trial for me and as I examine my life I have discovered that I find strength to overcome temptation and endure trials through the love of God.  Do I exult in tribulation? I can only if the “love of God has been poured out within my heart through the Holy Spirit.”  Without the love of God in my heart trials can and will cause me to become bitter and critical and I will lose the crown of life.  I must love the Lord more that my own life.  I know the reward will be given to those who live for Christ, and endure temptations, in the power of the love of God.

Meditation:  Do you exult today in your tribulations?  Write down some of the trials that you are facing to day.  Allow God to pour His love into you and know that the strength to over come and endure your trials is because of His love through you.

God, fill me today with your love and give me your strength to over come the temptations and endure the trial.  Teach me to love you more than my own life.

Daily Seeking God... November 17, 2007

Reading: Isaiah 55; John 4:1-26

Key Verses: Isaiah 55:7,8 “Seek God while he's here to be found, pray to him while he's close at hand. Let the wicked abandon their way of life and the evil their way of thinking. Let them come back to God, who is merciful, come back to our God, who is lavish with forgiveness."

Reflection: Thirsty???

One thing that this fast has given me is an appreciation for food and drink. (I've always had it... but did not realize it until now) In God's Word, there's an invitation to thirsty folks... Hey you! Come and drink... There's an amazing fountain you may not have heard of! The fountain of forgiveness. Sweet forgiveness that comes only from God!

Are you thirsty? The offer is there... Forgiveness. Let it sink in.

Do you need forgiven? I sure do. I'm part of the human "oops" club. Matter of fact, a lot of mine are intentional and I need to drink from that fountain again and again. You see, I'm kinda daft, so I need to be reminded. Again and again and again and again... However, God is gracious, patient, merciful and forgiving.

This is why I'm "drinking in" this fast. I don't like the act of fasting, but what it's producing in me is that deep hunger - that deep thirst for what God alone can satisfy. Oh how I read Isaiah 55 over and over and his words bury deep into my soul.

Meditation: Get your biggest glass and fill it with ice and water. Now, go on a run, bike ride, walk, in-line, do 50 jumping jacks, whatever you do to work up a sweat. Now come back, grab that glass of water and open up Isaiah 55 again. As you begin reading, begin to drink.

Oh God! How I thirst for you... how I long for you. Continue to build in me, to build in us a deeper thirst for you. For you alone can satisfy. Thank you for grabbing our attention... for yelling "hey, I have what you need!"

I pray also for our community. May your fountain of life spill out from us. Please use us to reach those who have not tasted your forgiveness. May they see that kind of forgiveness in us. Amen.

Daily Seeking God... November 16, 2007

Reading: Isaiah 40:21-31

Key Verses: Isaiah 40:28-31 “Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

"Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Reflection: There have been times in my life where I have felt completely hopeless.  Can God really take hold and get us through this?  It really would have to be a miracle for our situation to change.  There really is no way.

When our daughter was born, I felt like I couldn’t go back to my demanding job.  God had planned her arrival and I knew that, but we didn’t know how to financially survive, with a large house payment and other bills that we had.  Jesse was a full time student at that time, but he told me he would make it work.  We tried unsuccessfully to sell our house, so Jesse committed to work 3 jobs, 7 days a week, no insurance, just so we could survive month to month.

This went on for almost a year and it really seemed like there was no end in sight.  But still we trusted and held on to every ounce of hope, but it was really hard.  I was just so thankful for Jesse, and our new precious daughter. During that time, God kept us all healthy and provided for us completely.

But come on!   Are we supposed to live like this forever?  Can Jesse get a break?  Just as we were about to scream, Jesse got a letter from the post office in Portland and they wanted him to come in and interview.  He had taken the test THREE years before they contacted him and he had completely forgotten about it until that letter.  And three years before that they told him that they keep you on file for ONE year and he tested for Vancouver, not Portland.  He got the job!  It WAS a miracle!  God IS completely faithful.

These verses make me think Isaiah is saying,  “Heeellloooo…duh!  Do you not know who you are dealing with here?  This is the everlasting God the One who created you and everything around you!”

We are to HOPE in Him.  The word hope implies both trust and patience.  Trust involves confidence in God’s power to deliver and faith that he will keep His promises.  Hoping in the Lord also implies the patience to wait for God’s promises since God works according to His own timing.

Meditation: Write down an area in your life that seems hopeless.  Completely give it over to God.  Trust and have patience.  Remind yourself that God is the Creator of all things, He is in charge and He will renew your strength.

Lord Jesus,
Thank you so much for these verses; what a great reminder for us.  I am so thankful that you are the everlasting God and you will give us strength when we need it.  Lord, I pray that you will give us glimpses of hope in the midst of our hopelessness.  We trust in you and we love you!  In Jesus Name, Amen.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 13

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:5 “Loves cares more for others than for self.”

Reflection: The evening hour is here. The sky went from blue to black when I wasn’t looking and I’ve missed the in-between colors once again. From upstairs I hear the front burner flipped on and the teapot being filled with fresh, cold water. It’s time for tea.

My husband has turned this nightly ritual into an art. I can picture every movement. While he’s waiting for the water to boil he will place two mugs on the kitchen counter, usually the set my sister gave me for Christmas several years ago – the tan and olive green ones with painted leaves and purple grapes.

Next, he’ll select two tea bags from the basket in the spice cabinet: Earl Grey, Orange Spice, Green Tea, Chamomile, English Breakfast, or maybe even Blackberry Zinger. Once the kettle begins to sing, he’ll pour the screaming water into our mugs and let the tea steep for five minutes. (The steeping time is important. If he receives a phone call or gets busy and forgets the tea for too long, he’ll start completely over.) When the tea is ready he’ll scoop up each tea bag with a spoon and then wrap the string around the bag and the spoon, wringing the tea out into the cup. After the bags are discarded he adds honey; a teaspoon for mine, a tablespoon for his. The spoon clinks and clanks against the sides of each mug as he stirs in the honey.

About this time he comes to the bottom of the stairs and calls up, “Want a cup of tea, Sweetie?” This always makes me smile. He’s been preparing the tea for ten minutes – why does he bother to ask now? “Sure!” I answer. But he’s already half-way up the stairs with his steaming offering. Maybe this ceremonial conversation of ours is just part of the ritual, part of the atmosphere of intimacy he creates with this simple act of kindness. He pulls up a chair and we talk and laugh while savoring our tea and the beauty of our friendship.

Love cares more for others than for self. I’ve been following Christ for over twenty years, and never, in all of that time, have I read through “The Way of Love” in chapter 13 of First Corinthians and thought, “Yep. I accomplished that today.” To live a life of pure love is simply beyond my comprehension. But then I remember my husband’s cup of tea and my perspective changes. Somehow, his small act of kindness makes love, as a way of life, more manageable in my mind. I can do that kind of love. I can do small things that speak great love into other people’s lives: a word of encouragement, a meal, a clean basket of laundry, a hug, a friendly note. These are the unadorned offerings that say, “I love you. I care for you.”

Meditation: Identify 2-3 people in your life who God is calling you to love. Brainstorm some ideas for how you can show them that you care. Write your ideas down and then try working a couple of them!

Thank you, Father, for your love. Help me to recognize all the ways you care for me. Give me your heart, so that I can love and care for others. Amen.

Daily Seeking God... November 14, 2007

Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-25

Key Verses: 1 Peter 1:22,23 "Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God."

Reflection: As I think about this verse, I think about how easily we are turned against each other by the thoughts Satan puts into our heads.  I think about our spouse who inadvertently does or says the wrong thing, the person who accidentally cuts you off on the way to work, or the coworker who doesn’t return the kind “Good morning” or “Hello” because they’re deep in thought.  Remember, Satan will do everything he can to help you have a bad day.

Try not to let the little things people do sway your attitude or frame of mind.  God wants us to show the love he has for us to our brothers and sisters, a love that is from the heart.

Meditation: Write down how you have shown people love today, and maybe how they have shown it back to you at times.

Dear God,
Thank you for the love you have shown me every day.  Thank you for the joy and peace you have brought into my life.  Help me to show this love to others around me.  Help me not to let the things of this world get me down.  Your love shines bright everyday through all situations. Help me to see your love and pass it on to others.  Amen.

Reading: 1 Peter 5:5-10

Key Verses: 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer, and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Reflection: As I wake in the morning my mind begins to think about the tasks needing to be accomplished, not only at home but at my workplace. Will my relationship with a co-worker be tense today? Will there be an answer for health problems for a loved one? Is there someone I can share my concerns with? Gently the Holy Spirit whispers, “Yes, cast (give) all you anxieties (concerns) to Jesus, with thanksgiving.”

Meditation: Write a list of anxieties that are keeping you from experiencing the joy and peace that only Jesus can give.

God, as I release my anxieties (name each one) to you, I want to experience your freedom and peace in my life. Thank you for being there for me. Amen.

Daily Seeking God... November 12, 2007

Reading: John 8:34-35; Numbers 13

Key Verse: John 8:34 "I tell you most solemnly that anyone who chooses a life of sin is trapped in a dead-end life and is, in fact, a slave. So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through."

Reflection:  As I contemplate this time of sacrifice and challenge, I keep being reminded of Joshua.  God had a plan for the Hebrew people when they left slavery in Egypt.  So, God sent twelve leaders into the land of Canaan to scout it out.  They all returned with glowing reports of the bounty of the land, but only Joshua and Caleb believed that God could help them take the land.  The Hebrew people were still slaves in their hearts.  Instead of taking the land that God had promised them, they begged to be returned to slavery in Egypt.

I have to ask myself, how am I still living the life of a slave to sin?  I belong to Christ, the Son of the Almighty God!  Do I have the heart of Joshua, or am I living like a slave?

Meditation:  What has God asked you to do that requires the courage of Joshua?  Am I living as if I am truly free?

God, you know that sometimes I don’t think and act like a free man.  Thank you that through your Son, Jesus, I can be free through and through.  Please fill me with your presence and your power so that I may live life free and become the person you see in me.  Amen.

Daily Seeking God... November 11, 2007

Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

Key Verses: Matthew 6:33-34 "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today."

Reflection: I need to remember and keep in mind all the great things God has planned for me. I doubt the road I am on sometimes, and wonder about what is going to happen. I need to learn and live for today because God has already taken care of tomorrow! God has everything in my life under control even when I don’t. He knows everything about me, everything I want, and everything I need and there is nothing to worry about because He will take care of all things! My life is so very important to God and He loves me for who I really am... After all, He is the one who made me.

While I am fasting I am realizing more and more how much God loves me and how much my faith in Him really matters. When I eat God’s food instead of the food the world throws at me, I have so much more peace, so much more strength and so much more courage to live a life like Jesus!

I learned a song as a camper, and although it’s pretty silly, it’s very true! Here it goes:

Mr. Postman bring it to me
A copy of the NIV
I can’t stand to wait any longer
I need the Bible to grow stronger
Shooby doowa shooby doowa oh oh

Milk! Drink more milk!
Eat the word!
To grow strong, strong, to grow strong!

When I get into God’s Word and really eat what it is that He is offering me, I am so much more fulfilled! I have been learning so many things from Him, and it is so comforting to know that He loves me just how I am! I am valuable, cherished, cared for and made by God. He is the Author of my life and knows all chapters I will encounter. He is wonderful and will always take care of me… He will always give me what I need and He will always love and be there for me.

If He takes care of the birds, worms, flowers and fields... I am sure He will take care of me... God didn’t give those things His Son. He gave me His Son. He gave us His son.

Meditation: Take a moment and create a list of all the worries in your life: money, careers, relationships, health, family, future… whatever it might be…

Once you have completed your list, create a separate one for all the things God has provided you with. Is it food? Money? A job? A husband or wife? Children? Friends? A home? Your health?

Are there any parallels between what you worry about and what God has provided? Think about this and remember to focus on the good things God has given you and will give you.

Lord, always keep me aware of the things you have given me. Help me have a thankful heart and prepare me for your amazing plan. Let me be a light to others so I may remind them as well of your love and devotion to us. Please continue to bless my life with people who love me, and with the things I really need. I pray that I might have strength to help others to learn to eat your Word, and not the food of this world. Thank you so much for all the chapters of my life… I am so excited to see the next one unfold. Amen.

Daily Seeking God... November 10, 2007

Reading: 1 Peter 3:8-22

Key Verse: 1 Peter 3:15 “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Reflection: This Scripture spells it out for us. We are to “live in harmony with one another, be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.” “Keep our tongues from evil and lips from deceitful speech. Turn from evil and do good.” We need to be good examples for others and always be prepared to share why. “Why are you in such a good mood?” “You must be having a good day.” “What’s with you?” These are all great opportunities to share the hope of Christ with others. Take advantage of these opportunities and don’t let them slip by.

This Scripture is comforting to me because I am not a bold evangelist. I know we are commissioned to be fishers of men and I want others to be saved. However, the key word here is fishers… not catchers. If I am too intent on catching fish and trying too hard to catch, then fishing isn’t relaxing, enjoyable, or productive. If I try too hard to catch, I lose too many fish and don’t enjoy the beauty of the outdoors that God created.

I need to look for opportunities to speak a word about Jesus, cast here and there, and leave the results up to God. I may play a small part or a pivotal role in helping someone get saved. But I don’t need to stress and worry about it. I just need to do my part.

Meditation: Think about the poor examples of evangelism that you have seen or heard. Now think about the good examples. Think of the ways that you can be a good example for others. Write out a list of the different scenarios that have happened to you (or could happen to you) and your response to them. The more we focus on sharing our hope and look for opportunities to share, the more prepared we will be.

God, please help me be a good example to others. Give me the words and the courage to tell others about you. Help me recognize the opportunities to share about you and to build the relationships that will help make those opportunities more effective. Amen.

Reading: Mark 14:29-31; Mark 14:66-72

Key Verse: Mark 14:72 "Now Peter got really nervous and swore, 'I never laid eyes on this man you're talking about.' Just then the rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered how Jesus had said, 'Before a rooster crows twice, you'll deny me three times.' He collapsed in tears."

Reflection:  Poor Peter! I have to say that I don’t blame him. I would have done the same thing in that situation! If given the choice between denying Christ and being stoned to death by an angry mob, I would take the safe way out! I think the key verse really tells us how upset he was. He messed up big time.

We’ve all been there! We have all heard time and again that God will forgive our sins… even the sins that may seem unforgivable. But have we forgiven ourselves?

I think we all know that he forgives our little mistakes but are we holding on to the bigger ones? You know, THAT sin. The one that follows you around everyday and you don’t let go of it because if you don’t feel guilty enough you might not be forgiven? Well, guess what? When Jesus came back he didn’t hold it over Peter's head. He didn’t let him feel guilty. They moved on. (see: John 21) They had things to do and people to save! Jesus knew that Peter didn’t have time to wallow in regret. How many people would he have reached if he had?

Satan is the one whispering in our ear that our sin is too horrible for God to forgive. We can let that separate us from God. What could Satan want more than that? That is his goal. If we don’t forgive ourselves we will never be who God created us to be. We can never reach our full potential. So, I think it’s time to let it go. Don’t carry it around one moment longer. It’s already been forgiven.

Meditation: Write out the big sins that you’re be holding on to. Now, cross them out, tear them up - whatever it takes to get rid of them. They are gone! As far as the east is from the west, you are separated from your sins.

God, please let me remember that all of my sins are forgiven. Help me to let go of any guilt or shame that I may be holding onto. Let me be free to become the person you destined me to be. Thank you for your mercy. Amen.

Reading: Isaiah 40:28-31

Key Verse: Isaiah 40:31a "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength."

Reflection: Have you noticed that most everything today is based on the thought that "I want it now." We go to the drive up window and order our dinner, or call for pizza and ask them to deliver. We operate a microwave so we can hurry up dinner. We go through the "self-serve checkout" so that we can have more time, for more shopping, in the time we have left.

Often times we have the same approach with God. We go to Him and seek His help in a situation and want an answer right away. When He doesn't give us a quick response, we can become angry and wonder why God doesn’t answer our requests.

We need to slow down a little and rest in the Lord, thanking Him for what He Has done and is doing in us. Remember, God loves us very much, and wants the very best for us. If He takes a little longer to answer our request, it may be to see how much we really need it.

Meditation: Think of those things you're having difficulty being patient with today. Ask God to strengthen and sustain you as you wait on Him and trust that He'll do it.

Father, help me to draw closer to you and know what your wishes are for my life. Teach me to be more patient in my dealing with others and with you.  I know that you love me and want the best for me. Lead me in my daily walk with you.  In Jesus name I ask this.  Amen.

Reading: John 15:1-8

Key Verse: John 15:2 "He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful!"

Reflection: As a landscape gardener, (in my life before kids)
I spent a lot of time pruning trees, shrubs and beautiful flowering plants.  There were many different reasons for the pruning I did.  Some plants had disease, some had dead branches, some where growing out of control and out of their intended purpose, while still others were not living up to their full potential.  All these plants needed the careful eye of the gardener who could step back, see the full picture, and then begin the work of pruning so that they all could grow as they were created to.

So it is with God.  He is our Creator, our Father, our personal Gardener.  He desires to remove the things in us that hold us back from living up to the full potential that we were created for. He also desires to prune the good things in us to make them GREAT!

Meditation:
What branches in you has God been pruning out?  What are the good things he has been refining in you to make them even greater?

God, I don’t claim to understand all of your ways. And God, this pruning process is sometimes very painful, but with YOUR strength I will stand, willing to let you do some pruning in my life as you see fit.  Thank you for the work that you have already done in me.  Amen.

Reading: Nehemiah 1-6

Key Verses: Nehemiah 2:17-18 "Then I gave them my report: 'Face it: we're in a bad way here. Jerusalem is a wreck; its gates are burned up. Come—let's build the wall of Jerusalem and not live with this disgrace any longer.' I told them how God was supporting me and how the king was backing me up."

Reflection: Throughout Scripture we are given examples of obedience through faith.

While in exile in Babylon, Nehemiah (who was the cupbearer to the king), learned of the surviving Jewish refugees in Jerusalem. He was told of the disrepair of the gates and walls surrounding the city and he “…sat down and wept.” (Nehemiah 1:4)

After fasting and praying he returned to his job and King Artaxerxes noticed that he wasn’t himself. Through his repentant and broken heart, Nehemiah fearfully expressed his sadness to the king. This conversation resulted in God’s providence toward the Jews as a reconstruction project began! Being a cupbearer makes me suspect Nehemiah’s natural contracting skills but nonetheless he obeyed!

At every opportunity he prayed and consulted God. Builders of all specialties applied their skills to the project. They endured mocking and angry opposition. The workers even had to work prepared for attack.

In 52 days the massive project, which seemed futile and impossible, was completed. This resulted in a revival among the people of Israel.

This is very much like what we do here at Real Life; if we obey in faith, God can cause renewal and change in peoples lives!

Gracious Father please enable us …”to live a life worthy of the calling we have received… to be completely humble and gentle; to be patient, bearing with one another in love…” Eph. 4:1-2. These things we pray in your precious name, AMEN.

Reading: Proverbs 3:5-11

Key Verses:  Proverbs 3:5-6  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths."

Reflection: "Let go and let God." We've heard these words many times. I remember those times in my life when I tried to do things on my own and made decisions based only on what I thought was right for me. I left God and other wise counsel completely out of the picture and it brought the worst.

However, trusting God with our lives is the best decision we can ever make. He knows what is best for us. I confess that there are many things I don't understand about God and His ways. But, I know, with "all my heart", that He has a plan for my life. If I'm willing to follow Him, He will lead me every step of the way. This time of fasting is helping me focus on God and helping me to trust him even more with my life.

Meditation:  Think of ways you can trust God more. List some things that you need to give Him complete control of remembering that God will always lead you down the right path if you "let go" of your own will and put your hand in His.

God, thank you for helping me to trust in you with "all my heart". You know what is best for me and I want to follow where you lead.  Amen.

Reading: Romans 8

Key Verses: Romans 8:37-39 "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Reflection:  God never told us we wouldn't suffer. Often times when things are not going my way or I see suffering in the world I wonder to myself, "where is God in all of this?  Why is He letting this happen to me?  Why is he letting this happen to them?"

Then, I am reminded of what God allowed His own Son to go through for us...  Death!  A horrible death!  A criminal's death!  Death on a cross!  Spikes through His hands, thorns on His head.  Not only that, but the mockery, beatings and abandonment He experienced.  And He did it all willingly... for us... because He loves us so much and He knew we could never overcome the sin that is in us that separates us from God.  He bridged the gap for us through His love for us and by His death we have life!  He did it to purchase us for Himself and to bring us into relationship with Him. He did it, not us.  Our suffering will never compare to His.

As I reflect on this Scripture and learn that nothing will separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord, I rejoice!  It is not our love for Him but His love for us that brings us to Him, that bridges the gap.

Of course nothing, and I mean nothing, will separate us from His love.  Do we think God would allow His son to go through all of that and then allow circumstances or hardships take it all away?  NEVER!  Who can touch me now?  What can touch me now?  Nothing! No one! I belong to Jesus!

"neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord"

Meditation:  Take a moment to write down your fears and concerns.  Reflect on God's love for you.  Offer your list to Him (then burn it or shred it) and thank Him that nothing on your list could ever separate you from His love.

God, thank you that you have made a way for me to be with you.  Thank you that nothing can separate me from your love.  Please help me to cast aside my worries and my fears.  Please remind me when trouble comes that you are with me.  Please help me to live each day like I am yours!  AMEN.

Reading: Romans 8:37-39

Key Verses: Romans 8:37-39 "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Reflection: This verse has given me much comfort in these unsettled times. The idea that it is impossible to get beyond God’s love is the answer today’s troubled people need. God's amazing love!

Meditation:  Read this verse slowly and thoughtfully - dwelling in the promise, peace, and comfort that God offers.

Dear Jesus, help me to take your words to me as the gift of truth. Help me God to guide others to this truth as I dwell in your comfort each day. Thank you, oh God, for the power and truth of your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reading: Psalm 34:1-10

Key Verse:  Psalm 34:8 "Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!"

Reflection:  These verses reach out to me.  I think back on how they have comforted me, are comforting me today, and will give me comfort tomorrow.

I thank God for leading me when I seem to lose my way.  I thank Him for being close when “my day” isn’t developing as “I” want or think it should.  When I take that step of obedience, God shows His goodness to me in so many ways.  I can’t help but praise and thank Him.  Where would I be without Him?  I don’t even want to think about that!  This time of fasting is drawing me closer to God, getting my mind off “me” and more on “Him”.  Praise God!

Meditation:  Put on paper how God has and is blessing you.  How can I become more trusting?  In light of how God blesses me, how can I spread those blessings to others?

Lord, thank you for being close to me.  Bolster me when I slip.  Help me trust and be a better servant of yours.  Amen.

Reading: Joshua 1

Key Verse: Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Reflection: Sometimes life is overwhelming.  There are problems too large to tackle.  God’s tasks are far too big. Oh, did I say anything about people?  Yeah, those creatures are scary.  I know because I am one.  The word that comes to mind is unpredictable

I work with machines at my job.  If I press button A, response A will result.  Not so with those human types.  So many people are afraid of the unknown, yet they are good at being so unpredictable.  This fear can keep us from doing God’s work.

Dive in.  Do what God is asking of you.  Joshua’s task was bigger than any task I have encountered. During my college years, I was a junior high youth leader.  The youth pastor I served with had one question, and one phrase that he continually repeated.  The question was, “How big is your God?”  The phrase was, “big problems, small god… small problems, BIG GOD.”  We can be confident and sure that God is bigger than any known or unknown situation.  There are no unknowns for Him, and He is always with you.

Meditation:  Write out the phrase, “Be Strong and Courageous.”  Next count how many times this phrase is repeated in Joshua 1. If you are feeling quite weak and fearful, write the phrase as many times as you see it written.  Next, in the same passage, write down how many times God promises to be with you.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you that I do not have to be afraid, or discouraged. No problem, task, or person has the power you do.  I can do anything knowing that you are always with me. Amen.

Reading: Philippians 4:1-23

Key Verse: Philippians 4:13... It was hard for me to choose a key verse because today's reading contains several powerful verses.  However, in reflection, verse 13 has the deepest meaning to me:
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me".  However, I give honorable mention to 4:6-7 and 4:8-9.

Reflection: It seems like every day there is a new barrier, hurdle or fear to face.  Unfortunately, just as often as I have to deal with these daily barriers, I am also faced with the challenge of keeping a positive attitude - a bold presence to face my fears.   To be honest, I frequently fail at being positive and bold on a daily basis and I can quickly develop a bad attitude.

Well, after bashing my rock head against a brick wall enough,  I finally come to the realization that I can’t go through life under my own strength (or lack there of) because I tend to really foul things up.  This is when I  start thinking of Philippians 4 and repeating to myself, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.  This is where I get my resolve  to face the challenges of the day.

Meditation:  Make a list of challenges or things that you’ve put off doing because you were afraid of them... for what ever reason.  Then pray this prayer with me:

Lord I can do all things through you because you said so and that’s enough for me.  Please give me strength.  Give me the resolve to face my fears. Make me bold and fearless and give me the strength to control my fears.  Lord I need you right now cause I can’t do this (or these things) on my own.

Now light the paper that you’ve made your list on and watch burn up… I do recommend doing this near a fire place.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:13  "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

Reflection: I love how Jesus keeps it simple when he says "love one another". (John 13:13) Then reality hits! Do not envy, boast, or be proud. Do not be rude, easily angered, or keep a record of wrongs.  This might be harder than I thought.  I guess loving is seeing people the way God sees them - not perfect, and not always fitting into the mold I want them to fit in.

This verse reminds me that love is an action not a feeling. Yes, love is the way you felt on your wedding day, or that feeling when you look at your sleeping kids’ faces. But love is also not staying mad at someone who hurt you, or trusting someone who broke your trust in the past. It's not thinking yourself better than others and keeping your temper under control. Love is putting "childish ways behind you" and becoming a man (or women)! Love is maturity in Christ, and it's hard work... but it's worth it!

Meditation: Write a list of the people who God brings to mind that He's called you to love.  Write some actions next to each name of how you can show God's love to them this week!

God, thank you for loving me even when I don't deserve it.  Show me how to love the way you love. Help me to put love into action, and ignore my feelings. I love you Lord.  Amen.

Reading: Daniel 1

Key Verse:  Daniel 1:8a  “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine…”

Reflection:  Daniel was a young man who found himself in an unfortunate situation.  He was forcibly taken from his homeland to be trained to enter King Nebuchadnezzar’s service.  He found himself in a foreign place that he could not leave and he immediately was forced to make a decision; a choice between what he knew God wanted him to do and what the king demanded.  Scripture tells us that, “Daniel RESOLVED not to defile himself with the king’s royal food and wine.”  He made up his mind to obey God, no matter what the consequence.

Do I find myself in situations where I know what God wants me to do, yet I debate with myself between what I know I should do and what others (or I) want or think I should do?   Everyday I have choices to make; decisions between right and wrong, wise and unwise. Often it seems to be an easier choice to just go with the flow…to not stand up for what I know in my heart is the right thing to do.  When I have a choice to make, I want to be like Daniel…
I want to RESOLVE to do the God thing---not the man thing, no matter the outcome.

Daniel and his friends were protected and blessed over and over, because from the very beginning of their captivity they chose obedience to God.  I know God will do the same for you and me.   We serve the very God that Daniel did and He NEVER changes!

Will you RESOLVE to be obedient to God?

Meditation:  Think about the choices you are making in your life right now.  Are there any that are contrary to what you know God wants for you?  If there are, how can you make the changes you need to, to do the right thing?

Father, thank you that I can trust you to know what is the very best for my life.  Help me to be obedient to you in all the choices that I make.  And when I’m not sure, I ask that you would give me wisdom to know what to do.  I can’t thank you enough for all you have given for me.  I RESOLVE this day to choose your way.   Amen.
